Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) will start tomorrow’s Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina Moto3 race from pole position after setting the fastest lap of the weekend in this afternoon’s qualifying session. It is the South African’s first Moto3 pole position and only his second front row start following his third place start in Qatar two weeks ago.
Binder will start alongside fellow KTM rider Romano Fenati (Sky Racing Team VR46) with Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) completing the front row. Rookie Khairul Idham Pawi (Honda Team Asia) set the fourth fastest time but a penalty for slow riding means he will start at the head of the third row. Pawi’s misfortune means that Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) will head the second row with Joan Mir (Leopard Racing) and Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Moto3) alongside him.
Speaking after the qualifying session Binder said, “This second QP of the year went very well. I was able to put in many laps with a very good pace and I felt strong throughout the session, so I’m happy. At first, I went out alone and set a good lap time, but when I went out for the second time I knew that if I took a slipstream I could improve a lot. That’s why on my last outing I tried to feel comfortable and enjoy myself. It’s fantastic to have finally taken my first pole position. I want to thank the team, as they did an amazing job and provided a great strategy in terms of when to go out on track, as we never get stuck in traffic. I have felt very strong throughout the weekend, we have done very well and we are working in the right way. Little by little we are improving and to get pole position is an incredible feeling; tomorrow I hope to fight for my first win.”
