The 2017 Dakar Rally Raid gets underway tomorrow, 1 January, when the ceremonial start takes place in Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay. The 343 vehicles – 78 cars, 168 motorcycles, 39 quads, 8 UTVs and 50 trucks – will start the race proper on 2 January when the first of the 12 stages that make up the almost 9 000 km long event kicks off.

The 2017 event is the ninth to take place in South America and makes its first visit to Paraguay. After the start the rally moves into Argentina for a couple of days before heading north into Bolivia. After five nights (including the rest day) in Bolivia the competitors return to Argentina where they head south and then east to the finish in Buenos Aires on 14 January.

Multiple Dakar winner and now Dakar Sporting Director, Marc Coma, says,

“The route of the 2017 Dakar preserves rally-raid traditions, with a physical challenge that will push the competitors into the world of extreme endurance: 7 selective sections will be over 400 kilometres with one of more than 500 kilometres. The rally will be spent 6 days at more than 3,000 metres above sea level. The balance of difficulties can be illustrated by a double upward trend: the level of difficulty will increase just until the rest day, then a second increase in power will be necessary, to reach one’s ideal level for the “Super Belén”. Nothing will be decided until the very last special stage at Río Cuarto”.
