Race director Etienne Lavigne has confirmed that the first stage of the 2016 Dakar, scheduled to run between Rosario and Villa Carlos Paz, has been cancelled.

Heavy rain forced a number of postponements to the scheduled 08h00 (local time) start before Lavigne eventually had to call the stage off. The poor weather conditions meant that the helicopters, which are needed to guarantee the safety of competitors, were unable to fly.

The entire field will travel to Villa Carlos Paz under link conditions. Motorcycles and quads will travel in a convoy, cars on their own, while trucks will use the route normally reserved for assistance vehicles.
